About the School of Medicine
Medicine was woven into Thomas Jefferson’s original vision for the University of Virginia, with Anatomy and Medicine among the institution’s founding schools. That spirit of inquiry continues to define the UVA School of Medicine today.
Our 1,436 faculty members advance medicine through teaching, patient care, and discovery across 20 clinical departments, 9 research departments, and 7 research centers, supported by $269 million in research funding. Students train across two campuses—in Charlottesville and at Inova in Northern Virginia—gaining experience in diverse clinical settings. With 99% of graduates matching into residency, our students are well prepared to carry this tradition of excellence into the next generation of medicine.
From a legacy that includes three Nobel Prizes to groundbreaking discoveries emerging from our laboratories today, the UVA School of Medicine remains committed to advancing health and transforming lives in Virginia and around the world.
